Evolution of Conventional Scrubs till Date: Modern Cargo Scrub Sets and Mock Wrap Scrubs
Scrubs are uniforms for doctors, nurses working in hospital, operation theatre or other medical organizations. The purpose of using scrub is to provide maximum comfort to the user while maintaining sterile environment allowing least space for dirt and germs to hide in. Today we cannot imagine a doctor or nurse without a scrub, but there was a time when the concept of latest scrubs such as the Cargo Scrub Sets, and Mock Wrap Scrubs was beyond imagination.
Until it was the early twentieth century when the doctors understood the need of taking protection to maintain sterile environment in operation theatres and in 1918, started using masks made of cotton gauze in USA. Nursing uniforms were undergoing rapid change since their origin in late nineties when professional nursing schools were found. All of them were in bland white, 10 inches or more off than the earlier floor length uniform with caps displaying ranks. Later military caps replaced earlier ones, variation came in design and buckles or thread works reflected ranking. The 1950s were the ‘golden era’ of nursing industry. The caps, sleeve and dress length changed and new hemline, front buttoned apron, tight stockings were introduced.
In 1970s and 1980s some national standards were introduced for nurse uniforms, color changed from simple white to blue or white-blue checks, and the disposable capes and caps started vanishing out. Later wearing jewellery and make up etc. entered in this profession. By 1990s the nursing uniforms became very modern to pick up the name ‘scrubs’.
Modernization of scrubs started in late 1970s unconsciously and fashion was entering in the designs of surgical caps, mask, closed shoes and surgical gown. It is no more a short sleeved shirt with pockets and pant in blue and green that was considered as a ‘scrub’ in1980s. Rather in modern scrubs the length may be up to waist, long sleeves and devoid of stockinet cuffs (warm-up jacket) or have varied designs like V or round neck, short sleeve, wrap tops with elastic-waist pants (Mock Wrap Scrubs), many chambered pants with short sleeve tops for men (Cargo Scrub Sets) etc. The comfort of wearing scrub at workplace has popularized them beyond the boundary of medical profession.
By the end of twentieth century, printed fabric, multiple colors, varied neck line, wrap tops, pull on and string-tape waist pants, Capri and plenty of other designs reigned scrubs. Nurses of different fields use different scrubs that entail their field of expertise, rank and lifestyle. Unlike earlier days modern scrubs are of different size and user can customize the scrub according to need. Mock Wrap Scrubs and Cargo Scrub Sets are gaining popularity among the nurses and medical personnel.
